Grass Fed Ground Beef Sprouts Review
When it was announced this year that Fayetteville was getting a Sprouts Farmers Market, many of us reacted to the news with a "... huh?"
We had questions! What is this place? Should we be happy it's coming here? Is it affordable? Do they only sell produce?
If you're unfamiliar with Sprouts, read on to find out more about the healthy food store setting up shop in town.
•What is Sprouts Farmers Market? Sprouts, a healthy grocery store inspired by farmers markers, sells fresh, natural and organic groceries. It opened its first store in Chandler, Arizona, in 2002, according to its website. Sprouts now has more than 280 stores in 15 states.
•When does it open and where is it? Sprouts will have its grand opening at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Jan.10. The store, which will employ about 120 people, is located in the Freedom Town Center at 2810 Freedom Parkway Drive. •What can I find there? Sprouts has fresh fruits and vegetables, barrels of whole grains, nuts, sweets, baked goods, ready-to-eat meals, gourmet cheeses, gluten-free products, vitamins and supplements and thousands of other natural, organic, non-GMO, vegan and plant-based products. Sprouts says about 90 percent of its more than 19,000 products are natural or organic. It has more than 7,500 vitamin and body care products, more than 4,500 gluten-free items, more than 3,900 non-GMO items and more than 900 raw items. It sells local products and products for babies, pets and household.
The Butcher Shop at Sprouts has trained butchers who can custom-cut meat for customers, and all of its meat is fresh. "To qualify as a Butcher Shop beef supplier, ranches must meet Sprouts' natural standards before being considered, including sound animal husbandry techniques, corn-and-grain or grass-fed diets that are tested for pesticide residues, and zero growth hormones and antibiotics," according to the website. Sprouts has free-range organic chicken, grass-fed beef, natural beef, farm-fresh chicken, farm-fresh pork, freshly ground meats, and hand-crafted pork and chicken sausage.
The seafood at Sprouts "is delivered up to six days a week from approved vendor and fisheries who follow strict food safety and sourcing standards. We offer a wide variety of fish favorites for baking, grilling and sautéing, as well as a good mix of wild-caught and farm-raised specialties," according to the website.
Sprouts' full-service deli counter has more than 1,000 items, including Mediterranean dips, ethnic specialties, salads, a self-serve olive bar, fresh, hand-rolled sushi, more than 500 artisan and specialty cheeses, Boar's Head cold cuts, made-to-order sandwiches, beverages, snacks and its own line of microwaveable Country Kitchen Meals, according to the website.
Sprouts' dairy section includes items sourced from cows, goats, soy, almonds and coconuts. They carry rBST-free milk, yogurt, a selection of vegan and vegetarian items, and a diverse selection of eggs, including Omega-3, cage-free and organic.
The produce section at Sprouts, in addition to offering seasonal, specialty and organic items, also offers flowers, bouquets, potted plants, live herb plants and fresh herbs, fresh-cut fruits and vegetables, specialty salad dressings, dessert dips and marinade.
The bakery shelves are stocked with sandwich breads, rolls, tortillas, pastries and deserts. The breads range from artisan to sprouted breads, pita, flatbreads and naan, according to the website. It also has a selection of gluten-free breads and cookies, sugar-free pies and vegan baked items. See a more comprehensive list here.
In the frozen food section at Sprouts, you'll find items such as ethnic foods, low-sodium foods, seafood, soups, gluten-free breads and nondairy ice creams.
Sprouts' bulk section includes hundreds of bins and barrels with freshly roasted coffee beans, nuts, rice, dried fruits, granola, trail mix, baking essentials, spices and sweets, according to the website.
Sprouts' health and body care section has a selection of natural, cruelty-free health and beauty products, including bath and hair care, natural first aid and sun care, soaps, moisturizers, salves, dental care products, beeswax candles, natural brushes, yoga mats and cookbooks.
In its vitamin department, Sprouts carries vitamins, natural remedies, functional food, lifestyle support and herbal supplements.
In the beer and wine section, Sprouts offers a variety of domestic and international wines with more than 100 bottles priced at $10 or less. You'll also find craft beers, microbrews, IPAs and cider, according to the website.

•Does it have a store brand? How does it compare? There are more than 1,800 Sprouts brand items in the stores.
•Where does it fall on the price scale? According to thebalance.com, a financial site, Sprouts has good deals on organic and natural foods. Shoppers can also find gourmet coffee for affordable prices. According to cheatsheet.com, Sprouts is one of the six cheapest grocery stores in the United States. No. 1 is Aldi, and Trader Joe's is No. 5.
•I've heard Sprouts is like Trader Joe's or Whole Foods (both of which people would love to see here). How does it compare to those two stores? A lot of what makes Trader Joe's and Whole Foods popular is their in-house brands, both well-known and more niche food items, and they can be very affordable (especially since Whole Foods started cutting prices). Sprouts also has a popular in-house brand.
•Do they have a loyalty card? There isn't a loyalty card, but you can sign up to receive weekly specials via email. Sprouts' weekly ad prices run from Wednesday to Wednesday, so on Double Ad Wednesday, you can save more because the ads overlap. •What are the best items to buy from Sprouts? According to eatlikenoone.com, the No. 1 reason to shop at Sprouts is the produce, both for the price and the quality, including a good selection of organic good. Other things to look out for are good sales on cheese, a good selection of yogurt, a good bulk section, including bulk spices, honey, deli meat. Krazycouponlady.com says the best thing at Sprouts is the produce ("Promos often include grapes, peaches and apricots for 98 cents per pound, mangos 2 for $1 and eggplant for 98 cents apiece.") She also likes their meat, deli counter, vitamins and bulk bin items. The best things to buy from Sprouts, according to livethereallife.com, are produce, bulk bin items, organic grass-fed beef, chicken, organic juices and coconut water, canned and pantry foods, dairy products, organic tea, health and beauty items and clearance items. Realfinefood.com likes buying organic berries, nut milk, plant-based protein items (tofu, etc.), Just Mayo, loose nuts from the bulk bin, sheep milk yogurt, Zum Clean laundry detergent, Nubian Heritage deodorant, Earthworm Drain Cleaner and paper snack and sandwich bags.
